Get To Know: Matt Shoemaker
Growing up in Carnesville, Georgia, just 30 miles north of Athens, Matt always knew he would be a DAWG. While he was an avid athlete himself, on most Saturdays when the Bulldogs were playing at home, Matt would be watching at Sanford Stadium. His passion was only natural as his grandfather was an assistant coach under the legendary Wally Butts.
In 2007, Matt graduated from the University of Georgia with a history degree. He received his JD from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in 2012, graduating Magna Cum Laude. While in law school, Matt was a member of the Mercer Law Review and served as the Georgia Survey Editor. He also competed in Moot Court through the Mercer Advocacy Counsel where his team placed first at the 2011 Herbert Wechsler National Moot Court Competition. Upon graduation, Matt received the Moot Court Award and was inducted in the Brainerd Currie Honor Society.
After practicing for five years in Atlanta with Swift, Currie, McGhee and Heirs, LLP, Matt joined Jones Cork, LLP, in Macon in 2017. Matt focuses his practice on general civil litigation and has experience representing both individuals and businesses in a broad range of disputes. His experience spans state and federal practice as well as appellate work.
Matt is currently participating in the Leadership Macon class of 2020. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Central Georgia and the staff Parrish relations committee at Vineville United Methodist Church.
Matt is married to fellow Rotary member Bowen Reichert Shoemaker. They have two children, Phillips (6), and Elizabeth Allan (3). In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and watching any sporting event involving the University of Georgia.
