Vocational Spotlight: Keisha Callins

Dr. Keisha Reneé Callins is a women’s health/public health professional. She is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist with Community Health Care System in the Jones County and Twiggs county offices.  She also serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, at Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM). Prior to moving to Macon in January 2017, Dr. Callins, worked at the Mirian Worthy Women's Health Center, and also served as Assistant Medical Director for Albany Area Primary Health Care, in Albany, Georgia.

Dr. Callins earned her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Biology from the University of Virginia (UVA), and Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).   After earning her MPH, Dr. Callins worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator with the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center at UAB.  She was awarded a National Health Service Corps scholarship and earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM).  Dr. Callins completed her graduate medical training at the MSM OB/GYN Residency Program at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where she served as Chief Resident. 

Dr. Callins was nominated in 2014 by Governor Nathan Deal to serve on the Georgia Composite Medical Board and nominated in 2017 to serve on the Sandra Dunagan Deal Georgia Center for Early Language and Literacy Board.  She is recent graduate of the tenth class of the Georgia Physicians Leadership Academy (sponsored by the Medical Association of Georgia), and is an alumni of Leadership Georgia (Class of 2015). Dr. Callins has presented lectures both locally and nationally, including a congressional briefing on maternal mortality in September 2016. 

Currently she serves as an active member of the Macon Rotary Club and the Junior League of Macon.  Dr. Callins also serves as PTA treasurer for Alexander 2 Magnet Elementary School , and as a 7th grade advocate on the Mount De Sales Academy Parent Advisory Board.  At Mercer, Dr. Callins serves on the admissions committee and as faculty advisor for the ob/gyn interest group.  While living in Albany, she has served on several appointed committees, both with Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and Albany Area Primary Health Care.  Dr. Callins has been a member of the Dougherty County Rotary Club, Sertoma, the Albany Junior League, and served on the board of the Liberty House, a domestic violence shelter.  Since 2012, she has been the author of a monthly women's health segment in the Albany Herald “Health Beat”.  Her recent awards include Southwest Georgia's “40 under 40”, and the iHeart Media’s “Shero”, and the Dr. George A. Johnston, Sr. Community Service Award.

Dr. Callins is passionate about women’s health issues, healthcare for rural and underserved areas, community engagement, and healthcare workforce recruitment. Dr. Callins’ interests include mentoring students, reading, cooking, traveling, gardening, and raising chickens.  She is married to Attorney Joel Callins and they are the proud parents of a son, (Joel, 13) and a daughter, (Abigail, 9).
